The only migrant in the cow field hedges at Swanpool this morning was a single Chiffchaff.

When it had stopped raining just after midday, Andy and I did a tour of the cowfield hedges......but the weather defeated us : a brisk wind had sprung up and drizzle was never far away. As a result, no migrants showed; but once the wind drops and perhaps some sunshine develops they could well show again.

The two Redstarts were showing well in the cow field hedge this afternoon. I am certain that these are different birds to those last week. The male is visibly different and having checked this hedge at least twice each day I do not feel that I could have missed them for the last four days. It is strange how nearly all migrants are in this stretch of hedge (other hedges are available). This hedge has been the migrant hotspot for over 30 years with the highlight being a Wryneck in September 1983.

Swanpool was my first site today on a 4 site visit..... (see full report later). I was there 10.30 - 11.00. It soon became clear that no SpotFlys were around....the bushes seemed totally undisturbed.

However, I did connect with the female Redstart along the hedge (on the E side) running N from the Catchwater Drain bridge...about 50 yards before the entrance left into that cowfield.

The only migrants I saw in the Swanpool Cowfields this morning, Wed...8.00 - 9.00 were :
Blackcap (female)
Whitethroat
Chiffchaff.

Now after 5 consecutive SpotFly dips at Swanpool since my 6 SpotFlys there on Sunday 26th August, it could well mean the end of their stopovers there for this autumn. The main action will now move to the regular coastal locations where 10 -20+ are not uncommon in September.

However, I did have better luck this morning at the Fillingham Cowfields....see today's 'Spotted Flycatchers' post.
