No its not the right spot but it gets more views and Hopefully some of the 100's of people who look at this forum will actually make a stand and let this government know what people think -- cannot write more without exploding

This is such a serious issue that I think we as a BIrd Club should make a statement to be circulated to all of our MPs and other representatives.

Buzzards were exterminated in this county by gamekeepers by 1888 and only re-established as breeders as recently as 1996. We can't go back to those dark days surely?

John

What's the point of 2 separate posting sites for the same subject ? I'd already started this thread at 10.11 this morning on Bird Chat (already with 60+ views) as opposed to 5.14pm on this sub website. Anyway, it's not a Lincs Bird reports thread, is it ?......and will it be 'Moved' ?

If people took the trouble to look at the LBC website comprehensively, such double entries could be avoided......or is it perhaps more of a 'status' entry.

I don't think this is the time for this kind of squabble. Graham is correct in saying that this will receive more publicity here; indeed it has already overtaken the viewings in the chat section. Not the correct forum I agree and will probably be moved but more important is that the subject is well aired and seen by the maximum possible which won't happen in Chat.

This quote from the article cited by Graham:
Buzzards play a minor role in Pheasant losses compared with other factors like collisions with vehicles
Perhaps Defra will now start culling motorists too?

The only petition I have been able to find so far.
These DEFRA people are a disgrace! How can they say the helping the environment? Completly removing an animal from the Eco-system will mess it up to say the least! More rabbits, more pheasants, no grass, no insects, no cover. Waste fo time waste of taxpayers (my/our) money.

I definitely believe that members should make it clear to our MP's and the Government that we believe this action against the buzzard is a traversity
To many decisions are made like this and ignore public opinion - i.e. ruddy duck and badgers to name two and I am not arguing the rights or wrongs of these actions
I do know that the Government did make a U-turn over access to woodland a couple of years ago and that was because of public uproar
Do nothing and the privileged few will get their own way and the sight of a buzzard will be as rare as a ruddy duck
We don't want to go back to the days when raptors were persecuted and they were a rare sight in this country

I forwarded a letter to my M.P. when learning of this appalling DEFRA edict on BBC News this morning.
It is to be hoped that RSPB will diligently pursue this subject, though Royal Patronage might well dilute the objection.

Hi
This is a terrable decision by DEFRA and we must oppose it in every way that we can. Letters must be sent to our M.P.'s as soon as possible ( though I sometimes wonder how much good they do) We as a club should be putting up a united front over this. The shooting fraternity should be ashamed of themselves backing this kind of destruction of a Bird that has taken years to re-establish itself. The destruction of Buzzard Nests is diabolicle and wrong.
I absolutly support everone that has written.

Malcolm.

There is a good debate on this issue on Mark Avery's blog.

http://markavery.info/2012/05/24/buzzards/

Its certainly a shocking use of public money and one view that chimed a chord with me was that the shooting fraternity may have over played their hand on this as it is raising the question of the damage to native wildlife caused by releasing 40 million pheasants a year. It may be having negative effects on native Grey Partridge for instance. Apparently such release was banned several years ago in the Netherlands. Perhaps we should be working for that approach to be looked at in England too.

You have to wonder given the criminal way that hen harriers have been exterminated on english grouse moors whether buzzard numbers have gone up despite continuing persecution. Or maybe some areas with large estates are more heavily "keepered" than many shoots/estates in Lincs. Either way birds of prey are protected by law and thats the way the voters want it.

Great response Phil. Like GPC I am almost lost for words. The Nasty Party are well and truly in position. I have e-mailed various personnel I know in London,

hmmm have thought about this at length, i think the defra man is a clever little chappie.
firstly he has kicked the can down the road for making a decision on culls etc for 3 years (after the next election ).
second he does not think he can get it through while in a coalition so he announces a 3 year study which may or may not involve at a selected estate or estates the nest removal or limited cull hidden behind the veneer of research, re japanese whaling ?? !!.

third he satisfies the tory landed gentry by launching this study where he can help them out to protect the obscene shooting and killing for fun investment and help the tory voters.

fouth by doing a 3 year study he will gauge the strength of the opposition and all the objections at a very early stage. this will help him to weave his way around the opposition having already knowledge of the objections.

fifth he satisfies all his mp,s by dangling a carrot at the hunting fraternity saying were looking, patience ( soon ). he fends everyone away by saying its only a study with no conclusions being drawn, hmmm but he will set the parameters for the study.

so folks for me, it all depends upon where you as individuals put your little kiss x at the next election, but please do not say i could not be bothered to vote, what difference can i make, the answer is it is all in your own hands everyone matters. remember what you are dealing with, mp,s are 3 times more likely to go to prison than you. they are self seeking dreedy liars who forget they are supposed to do as you want and instead promote the interests tax exiles who contribute nothing but wield enormous influence, oh i pray for a real peoples champion that actually puts the majority first. watch this space   :(
