Enjoyed great views of the female Bufflehead (swimming with a group of half a dozen Tufted Ducks) from 4.00pm this afternoon, only c.35-40 yards from the bank. In the company of 10 other birders including Hugh M., Roy H. and Linda. In the 10 minute walk from the Car Park, there was a group of 4 or 5 Yellow Wagtails by the Reservoir edge.

For what it's worth, 'legs' and 'bread' were part of the banter amongst those who made the effort to see the bird this afternoon but, on the other hand.......??

PS. .....at least we know that the bird can fly.

From what I can see on my photos both legs are naked and its fully winged but still trying to age it though the small and diffuse rear edge to the white head patch, some spotting on upper breast? May suggest first winter rather than adult but just got in not uploaded photos yet and not looked at many references. In fact could it be a first-winter male?

A few relevant quotes from BirdGuides 'Review of the Week 26th April - 2nd May' :

c. " The evidence would suggest that the bird is likely a GENUINE VAGRANT (my capitals) re-orienting after spending the winter months in climes further south. "

d. " The trajectory of the bird's 350 kilometre trip to Covenham from the Netherlands was almost perfectly northwest. If it were to continue to follow this, the next landmass it would encounter after leaving the west coast of Scotland would be the southern tip of Greenland, before reaching Arctic Canada, over Hudson Bay and back down into the North American interior, several hundred kilometres northwest of Lake Superior - the heart of the species' breeding range. How about that for perfect ?"

PS. The sad thing about the Covenham Bufflehead record is that the bird didn't stay around over the weekend so that more Lincs birders could connect with it. I've spoken to a number of local birders who would have loved the chance to see the bird, but couldn't get away on the Friday.

It seems to be all happening while I'm away.
Still magnificent frigatebird, spotted sandpiper, social flycatcher among others are some compensation

The jury is still out on ageing and sexing this bird which seems likely to be a first-winter but it could be a first-winter male or female from gc tip pattern though ad fem cannot be ruled out yet all that can be said is it was not an adult male!
