Turnstone
A colour ringed bird: (upper left - white flag; lower left- dark blue over dark blue: upper right - metal; lower right -yellow over yellow) an Adult Female Banded: at Alert, Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada 82 30N 62 20W on 28 July 2001 was caught while preparing for migration after breeding - it had a brood patch which was refeathering and weighed 139 grams when caught. It was seen at Cleethorpes in the winters of 2007 - 2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 (thanks to Chris Atkin for the detailed information.
Alert is the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world, being only 508 miles from the North Pole. There are fewer than 30 records of Canadian ringed Turnstone in Britain, and all have come from Ellesmere Island. Interestingly, other Turnstones from Alert have also been recorded as far south as the Canary Islands and even Namibia.
To add to this exciting record on Friday February 18th I picked up a colour ringed Turnstone at New Holland with white flag left tibia, lime over yellow left tarsus, metal right tibia and blue over blue right tarsus -- the white flag is apparently the Canadian marker and it looks like this bird was also ringed at Alert but I am still waiting for the full details on the bird.
