Becoming very much the "week of the Goose" locally although far be it for me to complain.
Pink-footed Geese between 600 and 700 flying north.
As they moved further away a strange thing happened. What appeared to be a small group from the rear of the skein broke away in an easterly direction loosing altitude quite quickly and levelling out at about 70 feet which placed them on a path immediately over the garden. This small flock numbered about 60 and the leaders were definitely White-fronted Geese in fact I suspect they were all White-fronted.
The question I am now asking myself is why had they initially tagged onto the PF and then changed their minds? This was about 2 hours before high water so they may have been on the marsh in the same area prior to leaving. Recent records by others suggest that WF numbers have been much less than 60 so I assume that two or possibly 3 small groups have recently joined together. I know it is the season of pantomine, but today I have recorded a max. temperature of 12.4 degrees C.
