A stunning female Red-necked Phalarope is on South Scrape (from 360 hide or the road) from lunchtime today (therefore not the one from 10 days ago).

Female RN Phal still showing well tonight from 360 hide. Also a male Ruddy Duck from Reedbed (although I didn't notice it consorting with any White-headed ducks).

The Ruddy Duck is a first (and quite possibly last) for Frampton, whereas the phalarope is the fifth, all of which have been since 2009.

I really wish that people would not report on open forums sightings of Ruddy ducks. They are still being shot and who knows where the shooters get their information from.

They get their information from people like me Stephen, rather than open forums such as this.

The phalarope was still present this morning from 360 Hide. Also Quail calling in the fields to the south of the reserve at 05:50.

Shame on you then John for facilitating, what is for me, such an abhorent scheme. I am sure you feel there are strong and justifiable reasons for their extermination in Britain but I do not share your views. You have mistake my intention in responding to this thread. I was appealing to any other club member who reads these posts to keep Ruddy duck sightings to themselves, as I do.

Only 100 left in the UK they were saying in reception at Frampton this afternoon which is a shame if it is true especially when you remember until recently you would see a flock around that number at places like Rutland Water

The phalarope was nice though. My first in summer plumage even though it was distant and the view at midday was further obscured by heat haze

I agree Chris, particularly with the "if it is true part". There is a large reservoir in the Midlands where for two days a team of shooters from Scotland (sic), this winter were doing their worse. The expense of the thing does not bear thinking about. They shot five ducks in that time. The next week there were eleven at the same place!

I may do my first ever visit to Frampton soon as Ruddy Duck is one of the rarest birds in Britain, I hope they don't kill the bird before I get there.
I'm hoping that once the cull is over,someone will do a re-introduction, it should be much cheaper than the cost of the cull.

In case you don't know, Stephen, John Badley is the RSPB Reserve Manager at Frampton Marsh and I don't think he should be ashamed of his comment. The cull of this introduced species was approved in 2003 by the then Minister for the Environment (Elliott Morley!!!) to prevent the extinction of the White-headed duck and fully supported by the RSPB. By March this year the population was down to an estimated 120. The "shooters" cull under licence and are from the Food and Environment Research Agency. My personal opinion is irrelevant and I respect the views of others whether I agree with them or not.

What an excellent idea Geoff, I do believe that this might well happen! And before any one else decides to sermonise on my opinions I stated that although I believe the slaughter of these innocent birds is morally wrong there are reasons for the actions that are understandable but the idea that because governments have decided makes it right is laughable.

Did I miss the Referundum on whether its right to slaughter hundreds of birds in the name of a European directive on bio-diversity? Fifa have elections you know does that make it democratic!
