Hi All

Peter Overton reported a Great Grey Shrike in the Welbourn area just before Christmas, and has submitted a description for consideration by the LBC rarities committee. I guess that this bird is probably the same one(?), but if this is the case, it has been very elusive for the past two months?

Andrew (just back from South Africa and struggling with the cold!)

Just returned from a successful trip to see the bird! It is showing magnificently from the top-most branches of a dead tree along the hedgerow, and from on top of a clump of foliage behind a gate immediately to your left if you take the Temple Bruer turning.

For a brief moment, it perched on a high tree top along the A607 just after the turning too. Love its handsome little 'bandit' eye stripe! Number 189. 11 more to go for my year-end target!

Throughout my 10-minute stay, myself and the other people there were serenaded most beautifully by a robin close by. Perfect. :D

Driving up the A607 this morning at 10.20 I saw the shrike atop a small tree opposite the layby just South of Welbourn.

Still showing well, on and off, around the small reservoir until 11.00am at least.

I hit lucky with another visit : on my arrival at 2.35 today (Sat), the Shrike was showing very well, perched on the upper branch of a Hawthorn just 30 - 40m inside the metal gate bar by the Reservoir. It shifted its position occasionally but stayed on the branch for c 20minutes before flying off towards the far end of the Reservoir.
Just 4 other birders there including two happy photographers from Derbyshire.

Regards,

Freddy

Shrike still showing well this morning (Sunday 7th) and seen by at least a dozen birders while we were there. In trees and hedgerow in field opposite side of road from layby immediately before Welbourn village approaching from Leadenham. Birders from Yorks and Derbyshire making the trip.

Species Information: Great Grey Shrike

Location Information: Pottergate Road

Bird Information: Late afternoon, Sunday 7th March, the Welbourn bird had relocated to "Dave's Field" on the west side of Pottergate road, 1-200m beyond the Chestnut Tree Farm entrance. Mostly on the wires, but it crossed the road and perched 20m from me in a roadside tree for 5 min before returning to the wires. Posed nicely, in evening sunlight, for pictures.

Having been found the day before our holiday, Linda & I were pleased that the Great Grey Shrike was still there on our return. We had about 4 hours on site today. The bird ranged over a wide area but eventually posed well on one of the small bushes at the edge of the reservoir and gave excellent views.
