I have been this morning and got closer than yesterday to the bird, and Graham Catley is correct with his oiled, this can clearly be seen this morning, unfortunatly the bird is dying, very sad to see,a sad end to this affair.

Roger.

What a shame.
Well this bird certainly fooled me - and a few others as well!
Oiled divers that I have seen are usually partially covered with thick gunge but as someone commented elsewhere - it was almost as this heron had been dipped in ink. The oil must have been very liquid for it to have been spread uniformly over so much of the feathering.
We live and learn!

Roy.

Just a pity it was not reported to the RSPCA

There was nothing to report to the RSPCA on Monday. As I said in my post yesterday, the bird was actively catching small fish and did not appear at all ill.
