Seen from the hide which looks back on the visitor centre - Reedbed Hide? - off the end of the first island out on the right this afternoon around 3.30. It was under the water more than on top, but I got some good views. I'm more of an improver than a beginner by now, and I'm pretty sure it was a red-necked grebe. Definite red neck, and patch of white at the top. However I would feel a whole lot better if someone else has seen it as well.....!
PS If anyone is wondering, I'm well aware it could simply have been a little grebe, but I've seen those plenty of times before, and it had a sleeker appearance around head and body. I'm also aware of the maxim that 99% of the time it's going to be what's likely to be in that place, rather than something rarer, but that still leaves 1%.....

Well it looks like no one else saw it - mind you, very few people about that afternoon - and my friend who works part time for the RSPB at the Wash reserves says nothing has been reported there. I would actually be pleased to know if anyone has seen a little grebe in that area that could have been the bird I saw. However much I think it wasn't, it would be interesting if they haven't!
