First time here, and amazed there were so few birds on the lagoons/ponds and in the copse!! Is this still a relatively new reserve?
On the ponds:
Mallard - 3
Little grebe - 1
Coot - 6
Heron - 1
On the river bank going out towards the sea bank:
Twite - flock of 7
Wigeon - 8
Mallard - 30
Redshank - 3
Wader - my inexperienced identification was common sandpiper - 7
Goosander - 1. Male, flying up the river.
Could just spot large flocks of (probably) Brent geese coming in from Frampton direction on to the fields the other side of the river

A bit too early for Common Sandpiper. Not many waders around at this time of year. If you hadn't all ready mentioned them I would have said Redshank, could they have been Dunlin?

Thanks Russell - a helping hand is just what I need! I don't think they were dunlin - I've seen those in Norfolk - but I'm going back in the next day or two so I'll see if I can get a clearer view. They were huddled on the mudflats facing the river so difficult to get an overall view. Thanks for the help.

Moulton Marsh is a man made reserve created over 28years when the sea banks were raised and 15acres of saltmarsh was taken by LCC for a rubbish tip. This area is now the woodland. At the moment with all the berries eaten there is not much bird life. The ponds are saline lagoons which is a rare habitat nationally.
Little Grebes numbers reached 14 recently but disturbance by dog walkers has always been a problem to wildfowl here. The scrub holds passerine species in summer including Turtle Dove and Cuckoo.
Hope you will continue to visit the reserve as you never know what may turn up.

Thanks Richard - makes what I saw a lot clearer. There were many dog walkers along the bank, and the birds we did see on the lagoons were very nervous. I'll certainly keep going - just round the corner from me - and as you say, who knows what might turn up? That to me, as a beginner, is the wonder of birdwatching!
