The Lincolnshire Bird Club

Despite a good search of Tetney Marshes this morning, the Grey Phalarope could not be found, however, it could still be lurking in one of the creeks. Whilst walking from the car park towards the marshes, three Little Auks appeared from behind us and flew out towards the Humber. Three Whooper Swans were seen a little later, flying in the opposite direction.

At Covenham we had excellent views of the three species of particular interest - Great Northern Diver, Slavonian Grebe and the five Snow Buntings.

I counted at least 160 Cormorants at Covenham. Along with the grebes - and the diver, they must be consuming vast quantities of fish each day.
As far as I know Covenham has not been stocked with fish so presumably any that are there are either pumped in with the water or transported as eggs on the feet of birds.

Re the fish in the res. It has been there nearly 35 years now and apparently it has a large self supporting fish population which is so large that electrofishing is used to collect breeding stock to transfer to other sites.

Certainly there are sizable fish in there. The other week I saw a grebe with a perch of about 6 oz.

That would have been a Great-crested Hugh. I watched the Slavonian Grebe catching little fish of around 3 inches in length, it was having difficulty in separating them from the weed before swallowing them.
