the stuttering male trying hard to sing along Pasture Road Barton pits last night and the third bird of the winter at Barton found this afternoon in bridge pit where it rattled and called in one short spell before going quiet; as to previous comments I have found so far that these birds are not calling very much at all and clearly a lot of lcuk and good timing is needed to hear one in passing; late evening is always a good time as they seem to call quite a bit before going to roost like a lot of other small passerines; Wrens are particularly noisy and numerous in reedbeds at dusk; also seem to be very high numbers of Water Rails in the reedbeds this autumn / winter
