We visited Robert’s Field this afternoon and saw dozens of Dark Green Fritillaries, a few Marbled White, as well as some Pyramidal and Common Spotted Orchids. We also saw a few of the more common species of butterfly: large skipper, meadow brown, ringlet.

For those who are inclined to travel outside the county we saw Silver-washed Fritillaries at Bedford Perlieus and Black Hairstreak at Glapthorne Cow Pastures.

The Dark Green Fritillaries were amazing and absolutely everywhere – well worth a visit.

Regards

Sheila and Colin

And I had a nice male silver-washed fritillary in Elsea-Math wood on the morning of 11th July - along the east-west footpath crossing the site at approx TF096184.

Also a large fritillary near the butterfly conservation reserve at twyford Wood (the western end) yesterday 12th July - seemed to be this species also but not 100% sure...

But did they arrive naturally or by human assistance....?
