18 08 12, my garden buddliea hedge c 18m by 2 m high has had few butterflies over the past 2 weeks of flowering,
todays a large hatch of peacocks with 54 counted on the bushes, also red ad 3, small tort 4, green viened white 4, large white 2
(29oc by 1300 hrs).

John,

I had hoped on Monday last,13 August (re 'Butterflies return to BBH garden'), when you said in a 'normal' year you'd have at least 40 Peacocks (but only had 1), that some sunshine should encourage an emergence......but 54.....now, that really is a "pullulating abundance".

Freddy even more today at 1300 hrs with 71 peacocks 5 small torts 3 red ads, a few whites,
shows how valuable some patches of stinging nettles which i leave near the buddlieas are.

I had similar counts to John in the Sea View area on the 18th. Peacocks suddenly on the wing and had 60+ on buddliea in garden and adjacent blackberry bushes on the NNR. Also 3 small tortoiseshells 2 red admirals, few large whites and one fine looking painted lady.

25th aug, Garden buddlieas, 68 peacocks, 2 commas, 3 small torts, 2 red ads, 1 large white,
1 speckled wood,

What would we Butterfly enthusiasts do without our Buddleia in the summer - it certainly makes scents to have a few in the garden. :wink:

Interestingly, it was only many years after his death that the Reverend Adam Buddle (1662-1715 - a botanist and rector in Essex) had the genus of flowering plants named in his honour by Linnaeus.
