24 April 2015 Had actinic lamp out again. 28 moths of 13 species caught including: Purple thorn, shuttle-shaped dart, red twin-spot carpet, powdered quaker, garden carpet, mint moth, angle shades, pebble prominent and double-striped pug. By-catch: queen wasp and the burying beetle Nicrophorus humator. Cheers Brian |

15 MAY Actinic lamp overnight in garden with better results. 35 moths of 21 species including: Chocolate-tip 1 (new for garden) Plus mottled pug, foxglove pug, pebble prominent, bright-line brown-eye, angle shades, green carpet and waved umber. |

22 May Actinic lamp in garden overnight produced 27 moths of 20 species including: Swallow prominent, buff ermine, bee moth, blood-vein, garden pebble, pale mottled willow, campion, marbled minor agg and Vine's rustic. Cheers Brian |

With excellent weather this week I tried out actinic lamp in garden on Tuesday night (30th June) and MV bulb on Wednesday night (1st July). Both were placed over a Skinner trap and in same location in garden. Weather conditions similar on both nights (very warm, dry and light winds). With actinic lamp caught about 80 moths of 37 species including triple-spotted clay, foxglove pug, privet hawk, sandy carpet and short-cloaked moth. With MV lamp caught over 220 moths of 58 species including small fan-foot, light emerald, common emerald, elephant hawk, peach blossom, silver Y, diamondback moth, beautiful hook-tip, broad-barred white, lychnis, clay, red-barred tortrix and Limnacacia phragmitella. A much higher percentage of micros were noted with the MV bulb. Cheers Brian |

Evening of the 10th July recorded over 190 moths (52 species) with actinic lamp including hummingbird hawk (nectaring near trap), elephant hawk, small elephant hawk, Endotricha flammealis, small blood-vein, swallowtail, drinker, scarce footman (5), coxcomb prominent, cabbage, Eudonia lacustrata and a heart and dart with odd-looking marking. The hummingbird hawk still in garden (especially attracted to red valerian) on the 11th. Also, couldn't resist the Chambers Wood experience and popped-in on Saturday morning (11th July) and saw 2 purple emperors (attracted to dog poo on track towards 'Five-ways'), at least 8 white admirals, broad-bordered bee hawk and hummingbird hawk. 15 July 2015 MV bulb used overnight. Over 170 moths of 53 species including: Miller Shark Scalloped oak Dwarf cream wave Spectacle Drinker Short-cloaked moth Clay (7) Scarce footman (4) Elephant hawk (3) Gold triangle Swallowtail Burnished brass (3) Also, a common shrew was seen running around near the trap at about 4.30am. Moth trapping in garden over last couple of nights quite good although nothing particularly scarce: 20 August 2015 (Actinic lamp) At least 380 moths of 47 species including Silver Y 10 Greater swallow prominent 1 Orange swift 3 Copper underwing 1 Dusky thorn 1 Six-striped rustic 1 Tawny speckled pug 2 Knot-grass 1 21 August 2015 (MV bulb) At least 375 moths of 51 species including Gold-spot 12 Silver Y 9 Poplar hawk 1 Copper underwing 1 Dusky thorn 1 Six-striped rustic 5 Rosy rustic 1 Calamotropha paludella 1 plus harlequin ladybird |

Night of 4th Sept Actinic lamp produced about 88 moths of 17 species including: Centre-barred sallow 2 Silver Y 2 Vine's rustic 1 Garden rose tortrix 1 Most numerous were large yellow underwing, square-spot rustic and Agriphila geniculea. Cheers Brian |

Night of 10th September. As part of MothNight 2015 weekend put MV bulb out. Occasional light rain and fairly cool. 22 moths of 14 species including rosy rustic, dusky thorn and silver Y. Night of 11th September. Heavy rain and windy. Actinic light at window produced a silver Y, 2 brown house moths and garden rose tortrix. Night of 12th September. Dry but cool. MV bulb produced 52 moths of 16 species including silver Y, lunar underwing, sallow and green carpet. |
