Just got back from a brief sortie to Swineshead Bridge while my dad did a site visit regarding planning permission for someone close by.
As I was looking through my bins scanning the South Forty Foot drain adjacent to Swineshead railway station's southern platform, I heard a large splash. It sounded far too loud to be a cormorant or any other bird. Whatever it was stayed underwater for a good while, and when it resurfaced, it was heading west towards the Hale Fen stretch of the drain.
Got my bins back on to it, and saw the head was quite large, mammalian-looking with an otter-like appearance. I don't think it was a seal. Have there been any records of Otter in the South Forty Foot?
