We made our annual visit to a heronry at a private woodland in Mid Lincs and found that they are enjoying an excellent breeding season. Of the nine out of 20 nests we could reach, we ringed a total of 24 nestlings with a further 6 which were too small and a clutch of five eggs. (We have found over the years that they have a protracted breeding season where some nests contain nearly full grown young whilst others are still on eggs). This is the highest number of nests recorded at the colony since we first started ringing there in 1987. The nestlings habit of regurgitating their latest meal showed they had been eating frogs, rudd, eels and a rat!
