You ringing folk out there might be interested in the following.

Picked up an ill/injured Whooper Swan today from Willow Lake at Whisby and took it to Weirfield in Lincoln for a bit of t.l.c.

Was pleasantly surprised to see it had been rung in Iceland.

Left leg; yellow darvic K6X
Right leg: metal A 4400

Have reported it via the Euring website but should I be letting anyone else know?

Hi Graham,
I would also inform the BTO - ringers who control or recover foreign ringed birds only inform the BTO who, in turn, contact the Euring country of origin.

Regarding the Whooper Swan I rescued the other week at Whisby I receiced a very nice letter from the Icelandic Bird Ringing Scheme a couple of days ago with the following details.

Ringing date 21/08/1995
Ringing place; Suoura, Myvatnsheioi, S-Ping (I have no idea what this means! Maybe someone who understands Icelandic can help)
Sex; Female
Age; Full grown (3 years+) in moult

I make this bird around 16 years old at least which I thought was very good considering the typical lifespan is only 9 years (BTO website Bird Facts). However, on the Euring website the European longevity record is 26 years and 6 months, so shes got a few more years to go before any records are broken!
