Post subject:  Gibraltar Point Ringing Course 29th Aug-2nd Sept

Have just returned from the above where an approximate average of 100 passerines were ringed daily from three sites on the reserve. Birds of note were Tree Pipit, Whinchat, Redstart and Spotted Flycatcher together with other common migrants. About 12 waders of 8 species were mist netted on the high tides including a Black-tailed Godwit. Three vists in five evenings to the Swallow roost produced about 100 birds on each occasion, fifty of the 300 were Sand Martins. About 500 hirundines roosted each night but only 1 bird was re-trapped from a previous catch. Quite obviously, the vast majority only roost for the 1 night before moving on. As the roost has been there for three weeks, it is astonishing how many bird move through. In addition, course participants joined the Wash Wader Ringing Group and had an opportunity of experiencing cannon netting.
