Post subject:  Ringing birds questions!

How do you decide where to go to ring birds? Do you just go to certain places that have been used year after year or do you find new locations each year? Do members of the public tell you about places where birds are nesting or do you find them yourselves? I know you all ring many birds but I wondered how many go unringed, for example on my Dad's land at Grasby there has been a brood of Tawny Owls raised (at least one of which has survived) but these birds are not ringed. Should people let you know about broods such as this or not?
Thank you!
Jenny

Hi Jenny, I'll try to answer your questions. The first thing you may not know is that there are less than 30 fully trained ringers in the county so the vast majority of birds are not ringed. Most ringers have specific sites that they regularly visit in order to monitor population dynamics, adult survival, site faithfulness etc. When habitat change dictates, new sites are found. The nearest ringer I know to Grasby is at Nettleton. Tawny Owls are fairly common in the area but if any ringer is interested in going to Grasby, they will contact you by Private Message. Hope that helps.
