Hi Dave

I used the BTO online reporting tool here:

Not Fiskerton but I reported another colour ringed Little Egret in August, details as follows:

Ringing Scheme: London Ring Number: GK09574 Species of bird: Little Egret

This bird was ringed by Bowden & Ball as age nestling, sex unknown on 27-May-2013 at ********** Lincolnshire
OS Map reference ******, co-ordinates 52deg **min N 0deg **min W.
Colour marks left above knee: RW(D), right above knee: YN(S)

It was found on 06-Aug-2013 at Nebraska Farm, Kirton in Lindsey, North Lincolnshire
OS Map reference SK9198, co-ordinates 53deg 28min N 0deg 37min W.
The bird was Sight record by non-ringer Identified by Colour Ring(s)
Remarks

It was found 73 days after it was ringed, ** km from the ringing site, direction ***.

I've obscured some details as I think LBC are not publishing egret colony locations. It had moved between 50 and 100km in a roughly northerly direction since fledging. Not a surprising record but they all help.

I reported mine via BTO (having earlier sent it to the yahoo address (advertised on cr-birding) from which I've received no reply).

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Yes the LBC 'policy' is not to publish details of rare birds breeding sites and by 'rare' it is assumed that this refers to Schedule 1 birds. Whilst Little Egret is not on Schedule 1, a few years ago ringers were asked to treat them as such. A decision was made not to try and include Little Egret on Schedule 1 as they were increasing at a phenominal rate, and by the time the legislation was altered to include them, their numbers would be such that they wouldn't need special protection.

GK09574 was ringed by me in "South Lincolnshire" and prior to your sighting near Kirton Lindsey, this bird was seen a fortnight earlier at South Cave in East Riding of Yorkshire about 40 kilometres north of your sighting on 26th July...........perhaps it's heading home again?
Only a handful of Little Egrets have been colour-ringed at this relatively new breeding colony, so all sightings are particularly valuable as they help to provide interesting facts regarding dispersal and movements, so please continue to report all sightings !
Thanks,

Alan
