I've just returned from the above which was organised by BTO staff members to train ringers of varying abilities. There were 10 students and 5 Trainers + 4 Field Assistants. Various techniques were demonstrated and used but mist netting featured. 460 new birds of 42 species were processed together with over 100 retraps. Highlights were 7 Sandwich and 2 Common Terns. Incredibly, 1 Sandwich Tern was a first year ringed as a chick in Sweden and BOTH Commons were controls - 1 from Holland and 1 was ringed by Nicholas Watts at Baston Fen in 1995! Others included Little Grebe, Coot, Knot, Redshank, Kestrel, Barred Warbler, Redstart and Spotted Flycatcher. The students also joined up with the Wash Wader Group to experience Cannon Netting. An excellent few days which made me wonder why very few "birders" showed much interest in the proceedings.

Hello Stuart,

I think the problem is a lot of Birders disagree with ringing

Hello Toby,

My only comment would be that I had Breeding Montagu's Harriers very close to my home, sucessfully , until they were rung

They disappeared ? maybe the young were taken by foxes ?

My gut feeling is that they may have fledged if they had not be rung ???

Hi Dean,
I appreciate your views re the Montague's Harriers but I am aware of a Barn Owl which deserted after a visit by an over zealous photographer! I suspect that in both instances we will never know as broods fail to fledge for a variety of reasons. However, without ringing, your knowledge of birds would be far more limited than it is. I would like to invite anyone who has concerns about ringing to join me on a field trip so that they can be better informed as to the work of the BTO Ringing Scheme. I can assure them that huge improvements have been made since the deplorable days when ringers chased rarities into mist nets.
