Fortunate to be able to enjoy another glorious afternoon, and grateful thanks to the LWT members who have repaired the vandalised hide. This is a tidy little reserve, worth a visit if you've never been, especially if you know your warbler songs.......! FROM THE CAR PARK Common tern - 3 pairs on the shingle bank, later over the main lake Oystercatcher - pair nesting on the shingle bank Cormorant - 8 in a group Little ringed plover - shingle bank Lapwing - everywhere on the reserve, dazzling aerobatics all afternoon Jackdaw - flock of 12 Coot - pair with 3 young on small pond, one on parent's back Little grebe - pair on small pond Greylag - here and there throughout the reserve, on the Welland and in fields around Moorhen - one on larger lake, east end of car park, with 3 young Canada geese - small number throughout the reserve Mute swan - 3 Shoveler - 1 Pochard - 6 PATH TO MAIN HIDE Lots of song from the bushes, none of it identifiable to me. Lots of noise from the reedbeds here and on the Welland side of the reserve, which I am reliably informed was reed warblers, but I'm only listing what I saw! Willow warbler - 1 Blackcap - 1 Blackbird - several Long tailed tit - 5 Robin - 2 MAIN LAKE Tufted - c25 Mallard - c30 Mute swan - 1 Greylag - 6 flew in Canada geese - 2 Great crested grebe - 10, all appearing to be paired up Coot - 12, only one pair with young (6) Heron - 2 over PATH TO THE WELLAND Robin - 1 Green woodpecker - on small silver birch between 2 small lakes, great sideways view WELLAND BANK Mute swans - c50 in one large flock. Never seen as large a flock along here before! ROAD TO SPALDING Meadow pipit - 1 Barhead/greylag pair - last seen in February Swallows - 4 Next time I go I'm taking a small tape recorder with me.......... |
