2 swallows putting on a show over the reservoir in what would count as freezing weather compared to yesterday. It was bitter on the coast, but these two were swooping over the water then resting on a barbed wire fence to the right of the reservoir for a good half hour. No sign of the merganser, just a few tufted, a goldeneye, a teal and a wigeon. The white fronted goose is still on the wetland with a half dozen Canada geese, and a couple of thousand Brent. That's a beginners estimate - huge numbers. 4 meadow pipits up on the sea bank, 5 curlew and 5 snipe on the wetland and a barn owl hunting along the side also helped me forget the cold, but not for long! Maybe the swallows were storm petrels......... |

It has just been pointed out to me that the white fronted goose is a hybrid, and not the real McCoy. I did mention to a friend it looked like a greylag with sunblock......... |
