Post subject:  Whoopers Deeping Lakes 18 March 1.30 - 4.10

One of the highlights this afternoon was a pair of Whoopers - 2 flew off the east end of the main lake, then saw two half an hour later at west end. Assumed same two. As well as the usual tufted, mallard, long tailed tit (just 2), greylag, lapwing etc also saw:
Green woodpecker
Reed buntings - 2m, 1f on reeds on the Welland side of the reserve
Shoveler - 1m
Goosander - only 1f this time
Pochard - couple of males
Teal - 2 pairs on the main island in the big lake
Shelduck - 1m on one of the smaller lakes
Kingfisher - first one I've seen at Deeping, flying far side of the large lake
Gadwall - pair
Oystercatcher - still a pair on gravel bank, largest car park lake. Also 5 further up the Welland
Redwing - flock of c20 flew out of the reserve to trees on Welland bank, then drifted back in ones and twos.
Cormorant - only 1
Heron - one in tree near main lake
Still a few goldeneye. In amongst the usual great crested grebes was one very pale, no sign of ruff at all. Very immature??
