Prior to seeing the bar head and barnacle on the way back (see post yesterday) we spent a couple of hours at Deeping Lakes. As a newcomer I find it very difficult to estimate numbers, so I'll continue to just list species unless I can count them on one hand.
Oystercatcher - 2 in the lake by the car park
Lapwing - large number on one of the islands, same lake as above
Black headed gull - large flock on main lake
Great crested grebe - lots on all the lakes, and on the Welland. Suddenly seem to be everywhere!
Coot
Moorhen - 1
Mute swan - 5
Tufted duck
Heron - 2
Greylag - some around the car park lake, but lots on the river and in the fields around
Shoveller - 1, car park lake
Gadwall
Mallard
Shelduck - one near car park, pair on smaller lake
Bullfinch - pair in the bushes on the path to the main hide
Pochard - pair, main lake
Goldeneye - mostly pairs, showing really well
Cormorant - just the one!
Goosander - 2f
Little grebe - again only saw one
Kestrel - 2
Teal - pair landed on one of the smaller ponds and flew off after a couple of minutes
Blue tit
Long tailed tit - small flock of 7. Never tire of watching them!
Robin
Blackbird
Canada geese - 3, on the river alongside the reserve
As well as the bar headed and barnacle seen further up the Welland, there was a barn owl hunting the bank with a very distinctive brown smudge under its right eye. It seemed a lot lighter in general colour too.
