Just flew onto north side of St James' spire with unhappy bird in talons. Late lunch? Geoff |

Is that it's roosting spot? |

I first saw one there in Dec 2007 and during 2008 there have been 3 (2 females and a male, it's thought), though no more than 2 at any one time. They had been regulars at the church until December 2008 when all 3 vanished for almost a month. Now there is the occasional visit. A nest platform has been set up on the north side of the tower, much to the distaste of the church volunteers, but the birds seem to favour the carvings on the east face as a roosting point, coming in at dusk and leaving at first light. Barry Clarkson found the carcass of a woodcock beneath the tower last month. I have a photo, but not a pretty sight! Geoff |
