Can I just apologise to you experienced members out there for the simplicity of my posts - I haven't the experience yet to count flocks accurately, spot rings or even positively identify the LBJs (or waders OR gulls!), so my lists are really only of use to those amongst you who are as new to this as me and just give a flavour of what's about! So, what I hope I saw was as follows: Black tailed godwits - half a dozen still near the car park, no rings that I could see Redshank Canada, Brent and Greylag goose - one of each! Spent ages trying to decide what 'duck' the Brent was!! Tree sparow in the bushes by the car park Barn owl - 2, one hunting the sea wall and the other the edge of the meadow Curlew - small flock in the meadow Lapwing - everywhere! Reed bunting - new to me, but 99% sure of the identification. I wouldn't have been if the female I saw first hadn't flown off and joined a male! They were near the sea bank at the top of the path from the car park that goes past the hide. Meadow pipit. Also new to me, and it's the nearest identification I could find to what I saw. It showed for a couple of minutes on top of a gate post near the reed buntings - upright stance, slender, heavily spotted in lines down the chest. Shelduck - c100 as far as I could estimate. They came flying in to the lagoon as small flocks around 3.20 - lovely sight! Dabchicks - approx 10, but no sooner are they up than they're diving again! |

Hi Stewart, All sounds good to me. Just for piece of mind - where you saw the reed buntings is THE best place on the whole reserve for them. I don't know what those few bushes offer, but it is clearly perfect for reed buntings! Cheers, John |

Thanks John. Two replies to posts now by members - really helpful to someone who's on a steep learning curve! Mind you, one thing about being a newby is that virtually everything is a thrill. Thanks again. |
