Hi Had a good afternoon today. Saw the Ferruginous Duck at Eagle Lane, then went to Thurlby for the gull roost. Found an adult Kumlien's amongst the throng at 15:58 and watched it until 16:18. Getting pretty dark by that point. Kumlien's was a well marked bird, with stage 4 primary pattern (as described in Gulls of the Americas by Howel & Dunn, 2007). Also there: Goosander 4 Ruddy duck 24 Grey Wagtail Pink-footed Goose 2 (feral?) Also, ad Med Gull flew over A15 near Cranwell. PF. |

Would be a good idea to look for it yourself Roy and not always rely on other's !!!, just talking about this the other day how many Birders sit at home with the pagers & computer waiting for reports, get out and look. It seems to be the same people puting out news all the time, obviously people working can't get out as much as the people that don't. Great find Paul |

Dean, Despite spending much time during the year filming rare & scarce birds Linda and I also spend a lot of time out walking and birding. I have just checked my diary for 2008 and have counted that both of us, or me by myself, were out walking/birding on 163 different days. This is in addition to time spent filming. I do have a pager to advise of when rarities turn up, you have a mobile ‘phone that provides a similar service from Birdnet. Many of us that use this forum ask for help with seeing birds every now and then. I see no problem with this and am always happy to help if someone enquires about a bird in my area. Roy. |

I guess Dean was hinting that as gulls come in to roost, time is limited and it would be best to be there yourself. |

Myself and Dean Nicholson will be going to look for this gull this evening, but as blgp birder says, by the time we let anyone know it will be too late to get there before dark. As an aside, it is very rarely that a rare gull which has been in the roost at either Thurlby or Apex is present the following evening. Numbers at both sites fluctuate greatly and these gulls obviously also roost at other sites, possibly in the Trent valley. |

Best looking at possible day time locations - I will try and get to Leadenham Tip today - there is always a good number of large gull there during the day?? A |

No sign of the Kumlien's Gull at Thurlby this evening. Only about 300 large gulls with the highlight being a 1st winter Iceland Gull. Also an aberrant Black-headed Gull with creamy white body and mantle, black primaries and a dark smudge on the ear coverts. |
