Whilst birdwatching along the coast road on our bicycles this morning at about 11 o'clock Monica and I located a Red-flanked Bluetail in the Pines just to the north of the entrance to Chapel Six Marshes. It proved elusive for about an hour but later showed well but erratically and was still present at about 14:30 when we left. Thanks to Pete Hayward, Roy and Linda and Steve Tarrant who rushed down from Donna Nook in response to my request for assistance to help relocate the bird. Oh and thanks to Alex Lees for leaving it for me to find today!!! |

Well done to you both, what a cracking bird, with a bit of patience the bird showed well several times, perched on a fence post on one occasion, this species really does take some beating. ![]() Regards Steve |

Do Red-flanked Bluetails hang around much? Is it worth my extending my itinerary tomorrow to Chapel in any event? |

Yes Katherine go to Chapel six marshes as soon as you can. There should be some birders there to show you the bird if it's still there. |

... but perhaps wait on news first as to avoid a wasted journey if its not there. If it is go and see it - stunning birds. |

I would suggest an imm male after looking at Grahams photos. Hint of blue on tertials and lesser coverts - not obvious yesterday in the field. |

I managed ten minutes there at dusk the day before, shouldn't have messed around with the Pallas's for so long. Although it was probably fresh in - one of our team found one on Blakeney the same day that almost certainly arrived that afternoon - http://www.freewebs.com/punkbirder/latestsightings.htm - the area had already been thrashed in the morning by multiple observers. Time for Sibe Acc, Mugimaki, Eastern Crowned, Verditer Fly or some such...... but I'm sure folks will settle for 'cracker. Alex |

it is claimed that ageing and sexing these things in autumn if almost impossible but this bird seems to have some good juvenile features eg the pale whitish tips to the extreme tips of the tertials, sharply pointed secondaries and primaries, a moult contrast in the greater coverts with inners pale tipped although the latter feature is not as obvious as on some birds photographed; then it also seems to have some good male features like the developing whitish supercilia, the very bright tail and rump and the suggestion of blue in the lesser and median coverts; not sure if the very obvious white eye ring is of any significance but it is much more obvious than some autumn birds -- so I would suggest that it is a first-winter male but I stand to be corrected -- for anyone without the gen here are the previous records --note that the North Cotes bird was the first for Britain 2002 Gibraltar Point, female or first-winter, 15th to 16th November, photo. No sign of it when I got there..... so dipped out! Nevertheless, some pretty Goldcrests hopping around in the bushes the other side of the drain! ![]() |
