Please can some one help?
On two days last weekend Chris,Steven and Dave have reported a juvenile Shag at Grimsby Dock.
My wife and I have watched a bird the last few days in the same area and on Tuesday by Sainsbury's presuming it to be the same bird.
The problem is the bird we are watching has white on it and our Bird Guides clearly state a Shag never shows white.
Are we in fact watching a different bird, perhaps a Cormorant or does a juvenile Shag show white
Cheers Bernard Dodd

Hi Bernard, the bird at Grimsby Docks is in fact a juvenile of the species, and in this immature plumage they do have areas of white under the chin and on the throat,if you take a look in the rare bird section of the photo album, there are a couple of photo's of the Grimsby bird.Another useful pointer is the more slender yellow bill and the fact that when shag dives under the water it has a more exaggerated jump than Cormorant. This particular bird is quite tame also,a Cormorant would never come so close to humans.I hope these few pointers help. :D

Thank you Steve and Andrew, we did look at the photos but after I posted the question.
It certainly is the same bird that we have seen a number of times either side of the bridge and as you say it does not appear to be too bothered about people often coming very close.
Again thank you.
Cheers Bernard

The Shag was still showing very well in Alexandra Dock close to the Lincoln Castle today. It has now been present for 2 weeks.
Grey Wagtail also there.
