On Saturday a bit of raptor movement with a first-year Hen Harrier over the saltmarsh along with a Marsh Harrier, three Common Buzzards south at midday and four Sparrowhawks through. Also overhead were 18 Tree Sparrows and 120 Mipits. Grounded migrants included 40 Song Thrushes, 4 Redwing, a male Redstart, three Stonechats, two Chiffchaffs, two Lesser 'thoats and singles of Willow, Garden and Reed Warbler.

Quite a few finches about on 28.09. with 120 Goldfinch, 335 Linnet, 10 Redpoll and 4 Siskins. Stonechats had increased to five. A Marsh harrier flew south along with 3 Sparrowhawks and also 20 Skylarks. At sea were two Arctic Skuas and 4 RB Mergs.

However, the day undoubtedly belonged to the Pink-footed Geese. Birds were on the move before dawn and there was no let up all day. Many skeins were seen heading south way inland, overs came in from the west and then veered south at the coast, while many, especially after the weather cleared a bit mid-afternoon, were seen heading south over the sea. By 1645hrs the phenomenal total of 8,022 birds had passed by.

Hi James, mass numbers have been seen along the east coast today going by reports on the information services,Spurn broke its day count for the species and we saw 1300+ south in 4 or 5 hrs in Yorkshire today. It must have been a window in the weather for the birds to leave Iceland, what a fantastic sight to see them, but for me the sound takes some beating. :D

Today while in the area we found it was not possible to go through Saltfleet because the road is blocked. I asked at the filling station if it was possible to get to the haven and was told only with a very long walk, is this correct?

No, you can drive to the Haven car park and to Paradise from Saltfleet, but it's a couple of miles detour to Rimac. Road reopens late March 2009.
