For 2 mornings in a row (short row) a pair of peregrines have been cavorting around St James' church acting as though they are an item! One wonders what the church volunteers will do if these birds use St James' as a breeding site next year as the 'nest' erected for them ( a tray of gravel) has been placed on the north side of the tower and is accessible by anyone climbing the tower. At the moment, a small notice requesting visitors not to go round to the north side is the only deterrent, but as many who pay their £2 (to climb the 199 steps in order to shout abuse at the passers-by below) don't know their north from their elbow, a physical barrier restricting visitors to the south and half the east side is the only solution. Will the custodians do the decent thing and close the tower completely? Doubtful. Cheers Geoff |
