Post subject:  RSPB Freiston Shore - 10th August 2008

TIME: 14.20 - 16.50
WEATHER: Sunny, cloudy, 2 showers and warm.
TIDE: Far out, with foam crests on them given the strength of the wind.

STAR PERFORMER: Gotta be my latest patch tick.

I've never seen a KESTREL at Freiston before today when I saw a female that was hunting over the banks near the breaches and over the wetland too. It was there throughout my visit, and at one point I got extremely close to it, possibly less than 9 metres! I got absolutely CRACKING views through the bins. Swooping, pouncing, hovering etc... ooh, I got spine tingles!!!!! :D

OTHER SPECIES SEEN:

Marsh Harrier - male hunting close to sea

Black-headed Gull - 50, all but one in winter plumage
Herring Gull - 4
Greater Black-backed Gull - 3

Ringed Plover - 2
Curlew - 4
Redshank - 7
Oystercatcher - 5
Dunlin - 1 Juv
Common Sandpiper - 1
Large wader flock disturbed at one point, but they were too far off for me to make a good enough ID.

Little Egret - 3
Cormorant - 5

Canada Goose - 40 near reservoir
Mallards - usual group near car park

Swallow - 50
Sand Martin - 10
House Martin - 5

House Sparrow - 15
Tree Sparrow - 1
Dunnock - 2
Starling - 30

Blue Tit - 2
Pied Wagtail - 2
Goldfinch - 16

Usual Collared Doves, Woodpigeons and Rock Doves.

May be able to get a trip in to the LBC hide at Cut End this week. is the birdwatching good around there at the moment?
