I have NO further information on this record? Thought your members would like to know that a Caspian Tern was first spotted at Kirkby on Bain Gravel Pit Reserve by MPH yesterday (25 Jul 08) between 1604 and 1620 hrs. I confirmed the sighting and also observed the great magnificence during the same time. Many thanks J Harry Coningsby |

Follow up comment: Dear Webmaster Sorry for the lack of info. It was spotted by MPH first from the road between Kirkby on Bain and Coningsby, he then came into the hide at the reserve where I was. First we compared both our field guides to Royal Terns and Caspian Terns. It was definitely a Caspian Tern with broad bill, black mark and slight colour change near front. Black legs. It was amongst Black headed gulls at far island from the hide, but its size for me ( who has only seen black, little and common terns) was huge - size of a herring gull nearly! It was impressive! Flew off towards Coningsby like a gull right past the hide, it matched every description in Collins and Philips field guides, I was well impressed! MPH had it viewed in a Leica scope and I viewed it through my Bresser Safari 80mm. Both observations were clear broad sunlight. No mistaking this one. Many thanks for post to your members! J Harry |
