| Post subject: | Arctic Tern at Freiston Shore |
Hi 1st summer Arctic Tern this morning at RSPB Freiston Shore, along with 2 1st summer Common Terns (and the usual colony of adult Common Terns). Also, 2 Green Sandpipers, Common Sandpiper and Spotted Redshank at RSPB Frampton Marsh this morning. Autumn is coming...... Paul. |

You can hardly see the Mallards near the car park, or indeed any bird that comes to rest on the hide-side shoreline of the lagoon! Now, is it birdwatching or grasswatching we're supposed to be doing at Freiston? |

Nature reserves are for nature. Whats the point of potentially disturbing breeding birds, or other flora/fauna just to aid viewing by cutting down a load of vegetation? People seem to forget that nature reserves aren't just for their enjoyment, but to provide a disturbance-free haven for wildlife too! |

Spot on. We are trying to balance the needs of wildlife with the sometimes conflicting requirements of visitors. Normally we would graze the lagoon with sheep at this time of year to manage the vegetation growth. However, with the current requirement for daily close inspection bluetongue checks we concluded that the disturbance this could cause to nesting birds outweighed the benefit to our visitors of being able watch feral ducks through the fence from their cars ; -). Seriously though, there are plenty of other considerations which I wont bore you with, but once the breeding season is over we will reintroduce the sheep and this autumn we intend to cut the sward really short for wigeons, American wigeons and brent geese. Quail still calling at Frampton this morning. John |
