A few weeks ago, I can't recall the date as I didn't attach much importance to the report at the time, a local told me he's seen 3 Red Kites on the S side of Louth near his allotment. I queried his sighting and his description certainly sounded like kites which he'd seen in Germany with the RAF. Needless to say I dismissed them as typical non-birder imaginings. However, today, at about 4.45 Keith Atkin phoned me to say that, whilst cycling back home from the post office, he'd seen 6 (six) Red Kites over the E end of town. I dashed out to look and saw two which were by this time very high. I scanned the skies for half an hour but could find no more. Shortly before I left the site a female Sparrowhawk attacked the soaring local Peregrine. Can anyone suggest a good reason for there being 6 kites here at this time of year? Surely not migrants? And local breeders would have been seen occasionally. I guess that there will always be a significant number of non-breeding birds nationally but such a local concentration? Any thoughts welcome. John Two also reported on NE Lincs coast in last couple of days and three went through Tichwell yesterday to add to the picture - although no hypothesis included! Cheers Kev |

A guy down the lane from where I live at Irby upon Humber told me last Thursday that a Red Kite had been in the fields near his home for about four days but I dismissed it when I saw the Marsh Harrier in the same area. Maybe I was wrong! |
