At Boultham mere this morning there were c150 Swifts, c200 House Martins, c20 Swallows and c10 Sand Martins feeding over the mere in dull, wet and cold conditions. Suddenly all the hirundines started giving alarm calls and flew up high in a tight flock. A Hobby appeared, dashing low over the mere, and a Reed Warbler made a bad move by flying across the mere from one patch of reeds to another. The Hobby hit the Reed Warbler knocking it onto the water in a flurry of feathers, it then turned and flew back to pick up it's prey but the Reed Warbler fluttered up from the water and managed to fly into the reeds just avoiding the Hobby.
One very shaken, ruffled and lucky Reed Warbler and one frustrated Hobby.
