howdens pullover ( and he needed one today ) after 5 attempts i saw the richards pipit, first for lincs though i have seen quite a few over the years mostly in yorkshire.
The weather was 100yds visibility in the fog not a good day for birding.
The bird was approx 1200 yds north of the car park on the top of the sea wall about 150yds past the field with the large concrete blocks in.
Only other birds seen were
water pipit
2 reed bunts
2 little egrets
a few redshank
thats all folks  Terry Whalin :D

Well Done! I have seriously tried for this bird twice - both times without success! Both times I have had really good views of Water Pipit, and once I got within metres of a really sulky Skylark, but not a sniff of the pipit!
How unusual are over wintering Richard's Pipits in the UK. Is this a first for the Lincs?

A quick search of the Birdguides database with search critera 'first report' for the months of Dec, Jan, Feb between 01-08 produced the following reports (appended).

Considering the propensity of wintering 'pseudo-vagrant' Richard's Pipits to utilise under-sampled habitats e.g. farmland, coastal saltmarsh, then Britain might support an order of magntitude more winterers than we suspect.

That is still but a fraction of the birds wintering in Iberia and North Africa - comparatively 'well-watched' sites sites as La Crau in Southern France and parts of Sicilly host small flocks, while the site maximum for Morocco is 16...

Hi guys
have had a few days away in birmingham at my daughters, just catching up with everything.
Andrew according to my records it is the first time that i have seen this species in the winter, my records say i had one well into november but that was in cornwell, certainly sept/october is my usual sighting time for yorkshire/norfolk where i have seen them before.
Looking at Alexs overwintering records i wonder if the dates shown seems to be a more recent thing.
Looking at the wider view in recent years with records of pallas warbler a few years ago increasing records for yellow browed i wonder if it is just further proof of global warming.
