An excellent days birding around the reserve with some nice birds around and a few surprises, best of which wasn't a bird.
Trees/hedgerow Chiffchaff - 2 singing and showing very well Tree Sparrow - 5 Long tailed Tit - 2 Goldcrest - 1
Lagoon Scaup - 4 female showing well associating with Tufted Duck Goldeneye - 16 (4m+12f) Tufted Duck - 48 Shoveler - 2 Teal - 6 Mallard - 6 Pintail - 17 (8m+9f) Wigeon - 260 Dark bellied Brent - 14 Little Grebe - 5 Black headed Gull - c.200 Curlew - 1 Black tailed Godwit - 2 Snipe - 2 Turnstone - 3 Redshank - 4 Avocet - 6 Knot - 12 Dunlin - 30 Oystercatcher - c.350
Wet Grassland Goldeneye - 3 (1m) Tufted Duck - 14 Mallard - 25 Gadwall - 41 Shoveler - 97 Pintail - 143 (76m+67f) Teal - 398 Wigeon - c.2080 Dark bellied Brent - c.650 Oystercatcher - 2 Lapwing - 3 Redshank - 8 Curlew - 42 Little Egret - 3 Marsh Harrier - 1 female Peregrine - 2 (1 male + 1 imm)
Saltmarsh Merlin - 1 fem/imm showing well sat on post Hen Harrier - 1 female showing well over saltmarsh Little Egret - 1
Realignment area Pintail - 3 (1m) Teal - 10 Wigeon - 23 Avocet - 4 Little Egret - 1
High tide (sea and marsh edge) Goldeneye - 4 (1m+3f) Eider - 15 but distant (4m + 12 fem/imm) Red breasted Merganser - 22 Pintail - 49 (23m +26f)
Car Park Sparrowhawk - 1 at dusk rounded off a good day for raptors
Mammals Brown Hare - 1 Common Seal - 2 Harbour Porpoise - 1 surfaced twice heading north approaching high tide. Biggest surprise of the day. I have seen several from the open coast but this is my first sighting in the Wash.
All in all a good days birding/wildlife watching.
