Found a GGS this morning near Hawthorpe - perched on a roadside tree where the east Glen crosses the road at TF037273 but then flew to the south. Later, at 2pm, it was on hedges well south of the road, hovering briefly but then flew out of sight. Lots of dead ground, with no public access, where the bird could disappear. Might not be re-found easily. A bird I have long thought ought to have shown up locally Up at the Hawthorpe grasslands, the usual collection of short-eared owls (3+), 7-8 kites, 1 raven, 2 stonechat etc. However, dismayed to see one birder / photographer traipsing all over the grassland disturbing birds and another off the road. Maybe both had permission from the owner(?) but there is normally no public access and it isn't helpful to other birders (and most importantly the birds) or for keeping relationships with the owner / local farmers if people trespass. There were similar issues at Dunsby Fen a few years ago - best for everyone if people stay on the road (from where you get perfectly good views) and park considerately thanks records on Birdtrack Vin |

Yes there is absolutely no need to go wandering around the grassland, i have been to Hawthorpe dozens of times and fantastic views and photos can be taken from the road. Be thankful there is a farmer who is prepared to let his land become like this and more importantly realise that wandering around in the habitat disturbs the birds. People that do this are both selfish and ignorant and in my mind are neither birders or competent bird photographers. Oliver |
