A good roost movement for terns and gulls over the evening high tide period. High tide was at 2030, and between 1900 and dusk I counted ca. 4,360 Common Terns, 28 Arctic Terns, 86 Sandwich Terns, 3,500 Black-headed Gulls, 800 Common Gulls and a Mediterranean Gull, but only moderate numbers of the larger gulls. Other birds of interest were 10 Black-tailed Godwits, 68 Curlews, 45 Whimbrels, 94 Redshanks, 2 Ruffs, 3 Avocets, 140 Dunlin, one Little Stint, 30 Knot, 35 Grey Plovers, 5 Turnstones and an Osprey. |

Is that a Lincolnshire record for a Common Tern count Steve ? Any sign of any Roseates in that huge roost? Coquet Island summary : "The exciting news is that the Roseate Tern population (of Coquet Island) has increased to 93 pairs, one short of the largest population recorded (2006). Productivity is currently strong, with the first fledglings dispersing around the UK, before heading south. The ringing programme has been very successful, with 102 chicks ringed this year" Phil |

Its one of my best Common Tern counts, but not a Lincolnshire record Phil. Here at Donna Nook, there were ca.10,000 on 7th September 2006 and upwards of 4,000 were seen on 30th August 2009. Also in 2009, there were peaks at Horseshoe Point of 5,000 on 23rd August and 10,000+ on the following day. Further delving may produce one or two more very high counts. Despite my high hopes, there hasn't been any sign of any Roseate Terns yet. The best tern so far was a Black Tern a couple of nights ago. |
