noticed a couple of reports of late of ringtail Montagu's Harrier in the county -- ringtail is a name applied to female Hen / Monty / Pallid when the ID is uncertain as a rule -- Montagu's Harriers in Britain in summer are either 2cy male, they moult enough to be easily judged as males not females, females of any age or juveniles which are again easily aged as they have rich orange underparts and very dark almost black upperparts with rich orange wing coverts and are thus very different to females at this time of year -- it is always useful to have as much information as possible on such birds so a ringtail is either a female or a juvenile and the two should be separable unless the bird is 2 miles away in which case its a ringtail harrier! |
