Between 2pm and 3pm flock of about 65 in trees in this area of the City. Andrew

By the fishing tackle shop and the baptist church but did fly off east. Thanks Andrew that was a really nice flock

I live only 10 minutes away from the St Rumbold's Street/Croft Road area. I arrived there at 09.30 this morning (Sat) and immediately saw the Waxwings behind the Baptist Church. There is a large carpark with plenty of parking, and the flock was perched in the tallest tree just inside the Waterside House Environment Agency area. Before I could count them, they flew off a short distance to a tree near "The Crown" pub on Baggholme Road. I counted 104. The flock then returned to the first tree by the Baptist Church. This time, I counted 106........they were still there when I left at 10.00. Thanks Chris and Andrew for the tip-off. On my way home, I was obliged to stop at the traffic lights on Monks Road/Broadgate. At that precise moment, a large skein of 200+ Pink-footed Geese flew NW high up across the road in front of me. Brilliant.....it must be my lucky day! Freddy PS. I've come straight home to put the Waxwing news on the web so that other Lincoln area birders have the info.

I returned to the Croft Road/Baptist Church/Baggholme Road area at 2.00pm today (Sat) but there were no Waxwings around. I drove on a little further to the Crofton Road Industrial Estate and the Outer Circle Road area but I couldn't relocate the flock. However, returning to Baggholme Road before 3.00, I found the c.100 Waxwings back in the same tree as this morning almost opposite "The Crown" pub. Within 10 minutes they had flown off East - as per Chris' report yesterday......towards Monks Road. Driving along Monks Road, I came across the flock again - it's difficult to miss 100 Waxwings in a tree. They were feeding on tree buds, and possibly insect gleaning, by the Monks Road/Tempest Street junction where there is a large recreation field. As the Waxwings had just been perching and preening at the Baptist Church and Baggholme Road stakeouts, it may be that the Monks Road/Tempest Street tree is now a major food source, especially in the general absence of berries. They were still feeding in the tree when I left at c.3.20pm. Freddy

Nothing to be seen when I passed about 16:30 then I saw a flock by Siemens but after skidding to a halt they turned out to be starlings!

Chris, The two things that sometimes quicken my pulse when I am driving and my mind is on Waxwings are : 1. Starlings. It's all right in some light or if the sun is shining brightly and one can catch that dark plumage but time and again I've had to stop, go back and check. I now know where many of the regular Starling flocks hang out in Lincoln, BBH and on a number of the main Lincs trunk routes but, having passed them, I still sometimes think, "I wonder if they really were Starlings?" 2. Ash Tree seed-clusters. Not infrequently these regular roadside double-takes have made me momentarily think, "Ah! Waxwings," and then, "Dream on!" Freddy

A friend phoned me today 11/02 at 12:00 hrs, to tell me that there were around 100 waxwings in the trees in the old cemetery on Rosemary Lane (opposite to the Baptist Church). Unfortunately they had flown by the time I got there at 12:20 hrs. Best Wishes Derek

Had a good look round this area at 12:00 noon and a further look at 1:30. Unfortunately, there was no sign of any Waxwings in any of the areas mentioned in earlier posts. Cheers, David Cohen
