A miserable morning on the patch was considerably lifted by the sighting of a Bittern. This is the first record at the mere since 15th November 2010. First reported by Mick Welbourne yesterday around midday. Today it flew at 12:15 from reeds on the south side of the mere across to the reeds on the north side, opposite the hide. It landed in the front edge of the reeds where it stood for about 4 minutes, giving excellent scope views, before flying up and dropping into the back of the reeds. Also present today:- 2 Mute Swans 28 Mallard 8 Teal 17 Tufted Duck 1 female Goosander Yesterday 2 Willow Tits were present on feeders in the west bay, kindly provided and kept topped up by Ben. |

I admire your dedication Andy, walking across those fields on such a miserable day as today |
