Further to a web report re 9 Waxwings from Lincolnshire birder Trevor Lee, I arrived at the Great Gonerby, Grantham, Travel Lodge/Costa/Moto/Burger King Carpark alongside the A1, c.1.30pm today (Sat). Tramping around the area yielded nothing until at 2.00, I eventually caught sight of a group of Waxwings perched in a tree on waste-ground opposite Boundary Mill Stores, Downtown. There were 9 birds and two or three were flycatching before the flock flew across to the Travel Lodge area, perching in a Sycamore Tree's upper branches and next to a much depleted Rowan berry tree. They stayed perched without feeding until 2.35 when they flew across the Great Gonerby - A1 link road to a sapling by a large blue 'Services' sign, where they began to feed on Hawthorn berries. Within 15 minutes, I had arrived at the Marston STW Waxwing stakeout where (inter alia) I met up with Derek Pell (78) and Derek Brooks (Sleaford birder-87); plus myself (79) : 3 old codger birders! The 6 Waxwings were still using the tall tree by the entrance as a perching site, flying down to a roadside Hawthorn to feed on the berries or to a nearby ditch to drink (as per yesterday 16 November). A Grey Wagtail called in and perched among the Waxwings. When I left towards 3.30pm, the Waxwings were still there.......Another enjoyable Waxwing experience today : one group of 9, and another of 6. Still at least 18 Waxwings around the Asda car park area, seen late afternoon today, birds very active and dropping in to feed on berries in the car park in some cases only 5 feet from people getting car parking tickets. |
