Re your 'RFI', which I assume is texting for Request For Information, on the

American Herring Gull......reported from Gainsborough.

It was found by the noted Lincs Larid specialist, Dean Nicholson. You can read the latest information on the bird if you :

Google 'Lincsbirders' - click on 'Lincs Bird Sightings' - the 2nd topic 'Hykeham' - 3rd post; (you don't have to log in).

No sign of it this afternoon between 2 and 4.30 but there has apparently been a bit of a changeover in birds since yesterday, for instance 4 Yellow legged Gulls new in and only 1 Caspian Gull today.

Important to note that the bird is an adult and although the key primary feature of a black band on P5 has been seen by Dean, there is no photographic confirmation of that feature yet.

No report of American Herring Gull at Gainsborough landfill site today.

3 Yellow-legged gulls & 1w Med. Gull noted in a brief visit this morning.

I fancy a visit here, would somebody be able to give a street name or grid reference to where the tip is? Also When is the best time to go or is it any time of day? Thanks in advance Anthony

Hi Anthony,

Driving N along A156, Lea Road, just coming into Gainsborough you turn left, W down Causeway Lane. Park just before the metal gate, horse paddock on your left, go over the gate and follow the muddy track, bear right at the bottom and go up the side of the river Trent. The tip is on your riight and you can stand and scope it from beside the willows on the Trent bank. Obviously you need to be there on a weekday when the tip is working with the bulldozers on top moving the rubbish about. The gulls also sit on the banked area to the left of the tip and go onto the Trent.

Hi Anthony.
As a rule weekdays are best as they don't normally dump household waste mid-week.
Just a heads up on the site management and access. It's a Spanish company who run the site now.
Two birders were asked to leave the site for Health & Safety reasons, while walking into the site along the main access road on Friday. So best keep to muddy track next to main access and follow and stay on river bank to view the tip.

I check the gulls at one if their landfill sites in Notts. and had to go through an induction and be vetted just to enter access the site. Good luck.

Andy.
Any idea what's with the herd of horses and the sheep running around on this tip?
I counted more horses than Yellow-legged Gulls. 6 to be precise, plus the one tied up and err 3 sheep.

Thanks for the quick response I was going to tomorrow but will wait till Monday. I'm a begginer when it comes to larids so hopefully might pick up a few tips and improve my knowledge.

I forgot about the permanent travellers site on the other side of the tip Andy. (That's a contradiction. Permanent and travellers)

Good decision to wait till Monday. Though I should make it after midday and a few lorry loads of waste have been tipped..

I can relate with how you feel about Gulls Anthony. Like many birders I decided to invest in the Helm guide 'Gulls of Europe, Asia and North America' and quickly found out just how little I really knew about gull taxonomy.
