Baumber Churchyard 08/09/12. Spotted Flycatcher 1 today feeding high in trees in churchyard. Just a round up of stuff thats been around the village since the last feeding party of Flycatchers moved through on the 3rd. Hobby - 1 or 2 daily hawking for Hirundines of which there have been decent gatherings in the morning and early evenings, up to 80 - 90 on the 5th, House Martins seem to have had a decent breeding season after all, and numbers locally have recovered. Swift numbers in the village this year have been poor, probably as a result of the prolonged wet spell late spring. 3 Blackcaps were present from 3rd to the 7th along with 4 or 5 willow Warblers and the odd Chifchaff, Yellow Wagtails have been present in small numbers all week along with up to 15 Pied Wagtails in adjacent fields. Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and Common Buzzard single sightings every day this week. Gt Spotted Woodpecker, Little Owl and Tawny Owl all put in regular appearances this week but the best sighting for me was a new garden tick on the 6th when a Green Woodpecker dropped in on my front lawn ! Sorry if i've gone on a bit but this glorious weather has been brilliant for birdwatching all of this week, no rarities, but it just shows what can pass through your local patch at this time of year. Greg A couple of extra sightings to add to your list. Fri 7/9- Greensandpiper on flooded grassland at Limes Farm sat 8/9- male Wheatear sitting on round bales late evening. Also Hobbies are regular around the farmyard causing havoc amongst the hirundines. Mike |
