Pretty quiet over the high tide. Black tern - 1 juv Common Tern - c300 Arctic Skua - 1 Sanderling - 2 Peregrine - 1 juv Hobby - 2 adults. These engaged in the best aerial chase i've ever seen, as they teamed up to chase a Dunlin. The Dunlin was too quick and agile for a single Hobby, but by working together (they would take it in turns to chase it as it changed direction too rapidly for one bird to follow) they nearly got it several times. After about 3-4 minutes, the Dunlin eventually realised it needed to climb, and simply towered up into the sky with one of the Hobbys in pursuit. I watched until the Dunlin had dissappeared into the distance and the Hobby was a speck in bins, and at that point they were about 500m+ in height and heading towards Boston. The tenacity of the Hobby was amazing, but maybe it was just annoyed that it had picked on one of the few birds able to out move and out pace it in level flight!? PRF. |

Hi Paul In a lot of hours Hobby watching I have seen a few mutual hunts but usually by pairs within 1-2kms of a brood of young so worth checking around. On odd occasions non breeding pairs have done the same thing but those birds would probably now have dispersed and broken up as a pair. |
