Post subject:  Donna Nook, 21st-23rd August.

A juvenile Green Woodpecker present in my garden this morning constituted only the second record for the garden, the first being two years ago on 31st July 2010. Today's bird was feeding on a mown patch by the pond, an area heavily infested by ants. Interestingly, this record comes hot on the heels of another sighting of this species by James Siddle, two miles away at Pye's Hall, on 14th August.

The dunes at the south end today held only 10 Whitethroats, 10 Willow Warblers, a Common Sandpiper and a Mediterranean Gull, while over the sea at high tide were 75 Common Terns, one Arctic Tern, 31 Sandwich Terns and an Arctic Skua.

The whole week has been similarly quiet. Last evening, 22nd, a watch over the incoming tide at Stonebridge produced, amongst others, roosting flights of 3,600 Black-headed Gulls, 2 Mediterranean Gulls, 720 Common Terns, 2 Arctic Terns, 80 Sandwich Terns and 3 Arctic Skuas.

On 21st, incomplete observations ahead of torrential rain produced 2 Mediterranean Gulls and a Hobby.
